For sheer diversity, Hamburg is hard to beat. In this historic port, 15 different markets cater to all tastes. Traditionalists head for the square in front of the grandiose city hall, where the rows of stalls are themed, from sweet treats (cakes, chocolates and more) to crafts (leather, silver, tree ornaments). Children are entranced by the Spielzeuggasse, the Toy Street, which is full of playthings from around the world. Romantics opt for the Jungfernstieg market, whose focus is on posh food and gifts; while crowd-avoiders choose the smaller Fleetinsel market by the water, where fairy lights twinkle on antique sailing boats. Strictly for over-18s is the risqué Santa Pauli market.

In Bremen the promenade along the river is transformed into Schlachte "magic", a festive treat offering historical, seasonal and maritime attractions. Walking past the fortifications of towers and imposing wooden palisades, visitors will feel as if they have stepped back in time to the Middle Ages. Crafts-men, market sellers, jugglers and street entertainers all add to the atmosphere, recreating a bygone era when the cog ships would return from afar to the Hanseatic port of Bremen laden with valuable cargo. In the run-up to Christmas, the city centre around the town hall and the Roland statue, a UNESCO world heritage site, is transformed into an atmospheric Christmas market with more than 170 festively decorated stalls. It is regarded as one of Germany's finest Christmas markets. The historical setting, the lovingly adorned stalls and the romantic Christmas lights create a special ambience that enchants more and more visitors every year.

Hannover's Christmas Market diffuses a unique atmosphere throughout the historic Old Town. Glassblowers, potters and candlemakers demonstrate their skill in their respective crafts. Visitors can stroll and browse among no less than 150 stalls, enjoying delicious Christmas treats or simply observing the busy scene. In the historic Christmas village, a medieval town is brought to life again in all its olde-worlde quaintness. The Finnish Christmas Market on Ballhofplatz square exudes a charm all of its own as delicious flammlachs-slow-grilled salmon  is prepared on an open fire. The Christmas Markets around the central station located at Ernst-August-Platz brings the spirit of the festive season into the heart of the city and on the Lister Meile - where seasonally decorated chalets transform the pedestrian boulevard into an illuminated ribbon of Christmas pleasures
